Happy New Year! We hope you all are doing well and adjusting back into another semester of being a student music therapist. As you may have heard already, our annual regional conference will be IN-PERSON! The SER-AMTAS 2022 Regional Conference will be held at the Campbell House Hotel in Lexington, KY from March 24-26. Conference is a great opportunity to network with other students, professionals, internship sites, and musicians in our region. Our regional board will continue to monitor COVID cases and precautions as conference approaches, but we will also be implementing preventative measures along with the Hotel to make this experience safe and enjoyable for all of you. Please continue to check our conference site below as these details, along with registration, begin to roll in. https://www.ser-conference.org/ We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for our Passages Conference! For those of you unfamiliar with this, Passages is a series of presentations led by student music therapists for student music therapists in part with the SER-AMTA Conference. This year's theme is "Shifting Perspectives." What are the things that you are learning and unlearning about as a student music therapist? What areas in our field need more attention or a shift in perspective? What are you and/or students in your area doing to foster growth in our profession? If you have research, presentations, or a topic that you'd like to present on, the SER-AMTAS board would love to see your submission! For more information on where and how to submit your presentation proposal, click the link below! ~SER-AMTAS Executive Board 2021-2022 Micah Castillo, President Rachel Ford, President-Elect Cassidy Weber, Treasurer Carly Poloskey, Secretary Ashley Newkirk, Parliamentarian Fred Ra, Student Advisor I’ll be the first one to admit that transitions in life--just like in music-- are tricky! If you’re approaching the end of your music therapy internship you have so much to be proud of. Don’t forget to celebrate your hard work. After you commemorate this momentous milestone, you know that there is just one step between you and the professional world of music therapy: the exam.
To help encourage you along your way, I reflected on the ingredients of my test preparation that gave me the most confidence and set me up for the greatest success. You’ve got this, student music therapist! Soon you’ll be an MT-BC! Carly’s Tips for Certification Success
Bonus round: If you haven’t already, don’t forget to request your “Welcome to the Profession” packet: https://www.musictherapy.org/careers/packets/ You won’t want to miss out on these discounts for AMTA membership. ~Carly Poloskey, MT-BC SER-AMTAS Secretary Hey ya’ll! My name is Rachel Barber, MT-BC and I am the current past-president of SER-AMTAS. Over the past year I have moved from student, to intern, to new professional. I experienced a lot of change, some of which caused me to have imposter syndrome. Going from working at Arkansas Children’s Hospital as an intern to now working at Healing Hearts Music Therapy (a private practice) was a big shift for me. I went from working primarily in pediatric oncology, cardiology, and general medical/patients with eating disorders to providing services at memory care facilities and to individuals with ASD. While I have experience with older adults and clients with ASD, it has been a while since I have provided services in this area. It is not a shock (at least to me) that I immediately questioned my ability to work as a professional. Well, Tuesday September 14th, I provided services to my first contracted facilities and it didn’t suck! Actually, it went really well (like surprisingly good lol). As students, interns, and even new professionals, we tend to question ourselves and underestimate our abilities to successfully do music therapy. All this to say, imposter syndrome happens to almost everyone, especially in our field. DO NOT let this stand in your way! You are capable of more than you know. Go out in your practicums and internships and be bold! You got this. Warmly, Rach Hello everyone! My name is Fred Ra and I am the Advisor to the SERAMTAS Executive Board. As you return to school in the coming weeks, I want to challenge you to reignite your passion for music. A lot of music majors loose their passion for music. Studying, practicing, rehearsing, and learning about music can be exhausting! Play music that YOU love! When is the last time you made music just for YOU? When is the last time you actually played your instrument JUST FOR FUN? You chose this field because you have a passion for music; don't let that passion for music burn out! Play, create, make music for YOU! Here's a tip: When I catch myself feeling the burnout, I like to revisit songs from my childhood that I used to jam out to. My go-to song is 'I Want it That Way' by the Backstreet Boys. It's my go-to song to play on the guitar and sing on the top of my lungs for FUN. What's your "fun" song? Comment below~! Hello, SER-AMTAS!
My name is Micah (me-kah) Castillo, and I am your 2021-2022 President! I am so excited to be serving you all again and working with our wonderfully new board members. We’ve already started a list of shows/movies to binge over the summer, which I’m definitely ready to jump into very soon! This semester, I returned to Tallahassee and moved into my first apartment with some friends, started a mini-succulent garden in our living room, got back into the habit of buying too much boba, and just recently made my electric guitar debut at our first-ever Music Therapy Banquet. I’m very grateful for these experiences and to have just been able to finish my third year back with some in-person opportunities- I’m sure my family appreciates me being able to practice at the College of Music again as much as I do! One of the perks of going virtual was that our previous exec board was able to increase communications with the majority of the schools in our region, as well as host our first Townhall, actively engage with students on our social media platforms and our new website (wink wink), facilitate a fun regional project, and bring back Passages! We are EXTREMELY proud of all the ways our students stepped up this year to continue advocating and adapting for our field, but this is only the beginning!!! My main goals for SER-AMTAS this year is to provide even more opportunities of engagement through regularly-scheduled Townhalls, where we can open up discussions regarding diversity, equality, and inclusion, mental health/burnout, and other areas of needs for our students. As always, if you have any questions, ideas to share, or even just want to introduce yourself, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] or even connect on social media! Whether we will have the opportunity to all come together again in-person or not, our executive board is excited to meet you and ready to serve our student music therapists. This community is only able to grow with your participation and support! I hope you all continue to stay safe and healthy where you are. Best of luck to all of you finishing finals, internships, and all the things! You’ve got this :) Best, Micah Castillo (she/her) Hello everyone!
We hope you all had a wonderful first week of classes! This time since we all saw each other in LaGrange has been full of surprises and the unimaginable, but we believe there has been some good from it, and it may be because of YOU! No one was trained for this, but we want to acknowledge your school / University-affiliated club and how you've stayed connected during this time. That is why our regional project this year is the SERAMTAs COVID Connections Project! The Appalachian Music Therapy Student Association (AMTSA) had a laid back semester in Fall 2020. We continued with our usual weekly club meetings, via Zoom of course. Typically each meeting we try to host a program where we bring in someone to present about anything that can benefit the attendees as students and future MT-BCs.
Hi Everyone! My name is Emily Brewer and I am the secretary for SER-AMTAS! I finished my music therapy coursework from the University of Miami— Frost School of Music in May of 2020 and am interning at Florida State Hospital starting in May 2021. During my internship I am especially excited to work with forensic populations on the inpatient psychiatric units as my senior practicum was completed at Metrowest Detention Center, the largest correctional facility in Miami-Dade County, FL.
